With Super Bowl LIV set to kick-off this weekend, the FanLabel editorial team got to thinking: in our own fantasy world, who would we want to see perform at the big game if we could assemble our own halftime show?
In reality, this year’s performers include Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, which we think will make for a great show. But, we still can’t help but imagine our own lineup taking the stage. Check out our answers below.
Ryan
Garth Brooks with N.W.A.
Hear me out: My musical tastes are all across the board and I want to celebrate that. That said, country music is my most-listened-to genre and I want arguably the greatest country artist of all-time, Garth Brooks, as my headliner. Things get pretty random when I add in hip-hop to the mix, as Brooks and N.W.A. couldn’t be more polar opposites; however, this is my fantasy performance and anything goes.
What they have in common, though, is that they’re both pioneers of their respective genres and have a lot of influence on today’s music. They’re both iconic. Of course, N.W.A. would be missing a key piece of the puzzle without Eazy-E, but we would most definitely be tapping into a holographic or projection performance of him for this production, a la Justin Timberlake and Prince style at Super Bowl LII.
Think about it: Garth Brooks opens with “Friends In Low Places,” which then transitions into “The Thunder Rolls,” and “The Dance.” Then, the beat drops and N.W.A. comes out to “Gangsta Gangsta” at the top of the (set) list, followed by “Straight Outta Compton.” Eazy’s hologram rises and he raps to “Boyz-n-the-Hood.”
To close the show, Brooks and N.W.A. do a country-rap medley of “That Summer,” “She’s Every Woman” and “Standing Outside the Fire.” Unfortunately, N.W.A. will have to keep things family friendly with edited versions of their lyrics, so I guess “Fuck Tha Police” is out.
I’m sure both of these well-connected acts would have plenty of surprise guests to bring out, too. Sign me up!
Cara
The Spice Girls and Christina Aguilera
It may be 2020, but we’re headed straight back to the 90s, my friends.
Picture this: the epitome of girl power itself reuniting in full (Posh, I’m looking at you…) on the Super Bowl halftime show stage. That’s right, my dream performance is everyone’s favorite British girl group, The Spice Girls. Can you imagine a packed stadium of roughly 65,000 people singing along to hits like “Wannabe” and “Spice Up Your Life?”
As an added “ladies of the 90s” bonus, Christina Aguilera would make a special guest appearance to belt out tracks like “Genie in a Bottle” and “Dirrty.”
Bonus: National anthem performed by Adele.
Daman
Pitbull and Ciara
Not only has he been active for over a decade, but Pitbull constantly delivers hit after hit. Pitbull is the artist a DJ plays when a dancefloor needs a hit of energy, making him the ultimate crowd-pleaser.
Ciara has also proven herself as a force to be reckoned with. She owned the charts back in 2004 with “One, Two Step” featuring Missy Elliot. Her 2019 releases like “Dose” and “Level Up” prove that she’s ready to take on the stadium more than ever. I mean seriously, listen to “Dose” and tell me that wasn’t written to play at the Super Bowl.
Andy
Jay Z and Kanye West, with Daft Punk
While everyone remembers Beyonce’s several quality Super Bowl performances, few realize that her husband has also been heavily involved with the event. Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, has been signed to produce this year’s Super Bowl halftime show.
Paired with controversial (yet highly relevant) collaborator, Kanye, the two would undoubtedly put on a great show. The rumors about a follow-up to their monster 2011 collab album, “Watch The Throne,” have yet to be confirmed, but this performance would stand alone as an event that fans of both rappers would love. To elevate the star power to the stratosphere, Super Bowl mainstay Beyonce would also show up and perform one of her several collaborations with Jay-Z. Personally, I think “APESH*T” would be a great choice.
Legendary producers and DJs, Daft Punk, would make the perfect backdrop DJs for this act. Daft Punk has collaborated with Kanye in the past, so we’d be sure to hear “Stronger” during the performance. Besides being stellar DJs, Daft Punk also has several standalone hits under their belt. “Around The World” and “One More Time” are both sure to resonate well with the Super Bowl’s vast audience. With enough common ground to seamlessly transition from megahit to megahit, these three acts would surely throw a halftime show to remember.
