Where do you start when putting together the 500 greatest songs of all time?

Do you begin listing the most commercially successful tracks, or something more nuanced, like adding songs that’ve had the most influence over a particular genre?

The editors of Rolling Stone did an incredible job balancing cultural impact and reverence to determine their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. That said, and because of the subjectivity of music, not everyone was satisfied. Cue countless threads, tier lists, and video essays on social media.

At FanLabel, we wanted to see if we could challenge ourselves to address the wide range of opinions shared. Our staff, comprised of a range of tastes and backgrounds, works tirelessly every day to curate thousands of songs in challenges in every genre for our app — in a few years of doing this, you can say we know music. To update the list, we listened to what the passionate music community was saying about omissions of songs and artists that had major impact in the last century. We cross-referenced those with songs we believe had the greatest social and societal influence. We hope we’ve accounted for those excluded artists and tracks that we’re all so passionate about.

Check out FanLabel’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time below and listen to our list on our Spotify Playlist.
